My Thoughts:

I’ve always been fascinated by historical witchcraft trials, and have read quite a few books inspired by the famous Pendle Hill witches who were accused and arrested in 1612 in Lancashire. I also love books set in the 17th century. So my ears pricked up when I heard of The Familiars, a debut novel which sparked a nine-way bidding war in the UK.

 

Fleetwood Shuttleworth is a young noblewoman who is with child once again – but all her previous pregnancies have ended tragically with miscarriage. Her husband needs an heir, but she is afraid of the cost of keeping on trying since she has found a letter from a doctor that says she will not survive another birth.

 

In her terror she flees into the forest, and there meets a midwife named Alice Grey, who promises to help her. But it is a dangerous time to be someone with herb-lore – accusations of witchcraft are tearing the small community apart, and Fleetwood is soon fighting for more than the life of her unborn child.

 

The character of Fleetwood Shuttleworth was inspired by a real-life woman with the same fabulous name, and the witch-hunt is also true. This gives this novel an extra depth of gravitas and relevance. The writing is swift and immersive, and Fleetwood herself is all too human. Loved it!

My Thoughts:

I was on a panel with Robyn Cadwaller at the Perth Writers Festival a couple of years ago, and bought her book on the day as it just sounded so fascinating. An anchoress was a young woman who was walled up in a tiny cell in medieval times, living the rest of her life within that tiny space, praying, fasting and advising the women of the village. I have long been interested in stories of imprisoned women, and so I had read about anchoresses before. I was really intrigued to see how Robyn Cadwaller would bring to life a story of a young woman who voluntarily allows herself to be locked away from the world.

Set in England in 1255, the story begins with 17-year old Sarah being enclosed within her cell. Her door is literally nailed shut. The cell is only seven by nine paces, with a small window to the outside world through which food and water is passed to her, and a narrow aperture (intriguingly called ‘a squint’) into the church. The only man she is permitted to speak to is her priest and confessor. She has two maids who serve her and guard her, who Sarah is meant to guide in a spiritual life.

Yet the world is not so easy to lock away. Sarah sees and hears glimpses of the life of the village, and is threatened by desire, grief, doubt and fear just as much as any other woman.

She is haunted by the lives and deaths of the two women who were enclosed in this cell before her. One died, and one begged to be set free, much to the embarrassment of the church. Sarah wants to be good … but it is much harder than she could ever have imagined.

A beautiful, slow and thoughtful book with some really lovely pieces of lyrical writing, The Anchoress is a rare glimpse into a sliver of the almost forgotten past.

My Thoughts:

I first met Georgia when we were both young writers, our first books being published around the same time. We saw each other occasionally at literary festivals and parties, but I never really got to know her well and I never read any of her work. So many books, so little time!

Then, in 2016, we were both guests at the Byron Bay Writers Festival, and I went to listen to her speak in conversation with Charlotte Wood. Georgia had written a novel called Between a Wolf and a Dog about a woman who discovers she is dying of a brain tumour. When her novel was about to be published, Georgia discovered that her dear friend and mentor Rosie Scott was dying of the same awful cause. One month later, Georgia had a seizure in her back garden. She too has glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive and incurable form of brain cancer. The eeriness of the coincidence, the suddenness of the disease’s onset, the way the tumour had sunk its poison-tipped claws into the language centre of her brain, the ominous shadow of her coming death – Georgie spoke about all of these so frankly and beautifully with her friend Charlotte that I was inexpressibly moved. She died soon after that interview, and this memoir of her last year of life was published posthumously. It is spare and delicate and haunting and unutterably moving. An absolutely gripping page-turner of a novel set in Elizabethan times, The Locksmith’s Daughter is told from the first person point of view of a young woman named Mallory Bright, the story starts a little slowly but the pace soon quickens, and the plot begins to twist and turn in unexpected ways.

 

Mallory is the daughter of a master locksmith who has taught her all his secrets. One evening her father is visited by the Queen’s spymaster Sir Frances Walsingham and Mallory is asked to show off her skills. She finds herself being trained as a spy to work on Walsingham’s behalf, and is drawn deeper and deeper into a dark and violent world.

 

The book is set during a time of intense religious strife, when Jesuit priests were being hunted down and hanged, drawn and quartered. Mallory finds herself caught with divided loyalties and in danger herself. The world of Elizabethan England is captured with all its myriad sounds and smells, and I particularly loved all the details about devious locks and how the Elizabethan secret service worked. It felt so real and authentic, it was as if I had actually slipped back in time myself – always a sign of meticulous research and attention to detail.

My Thoughts:

A story that moves between the past and the present, with intrigue, passion, betrayal and the metafictive use of a dark fairy-tale – it’ll be no surprise to anyone that I loved Beyond the Orchard, the first novel of Anna Romer’s that I have read.

I loved the name of the heroine – ‘Lucy Briar’ - and the name of the house – ‘Bitterwood’. Names are always very important to me, and I love it when an author takes care in crafting their names. I also loved the setting – an old house set on cliffs with a creepy ice house in the gardens. The scenes set in the 1930s were particularly powerful, and I loved the us evocation of the Australian landscape.

The story is a complex one, with a great many characters and numerous different time periods, but I thought the numerous narrative threads were woven together with a light hand, and I never got confused about who was who and when was when.

The mysteries hidden in the past were truly suspenseful, and I found myself turning the pages faster and faster, really wanting the secrets to be revealed.

All in all, Beyond the Orchard is a tantalising mix of mystery and romance – Anna Romer weaves together the past and the present with a deft hand, creating a compelling page-turner with a shadowy fairy-tale-like atmosphere.

My Thoughts:

A delicate and profound memoir of dying written by a doctor with a poet’s turn of phrase, When Breath Becomes Air is one of those deceptively simple books that can pierce you to the heart. Paul Kalanithi is a neurosurgeon who has devoted his life to learning how to heal the sick, yet when he is diagnosed with inoperable cancer he must somehow find a way to come to terms with his own inevitable demise. He charts his life’s journey and his own fascination with the human brain and its capabilities, in language as clean and precise as a scalpel. It’s the kind of book you can open at random and find something beautiful and profound on every page. For example, plucked accidentally from p87:

For amid that unique suffering involved by severe brain damage, the suffering often felt more by families that by patients, it is not merely the physicians who do not see the full significance. The families who gather around their beloved – their beloved whose sheared heads contained battered brains – do not realise the full significance either. They see the past, the accumulation of memories, the freshly felt love, all represented by the body before them. I see the possible futures, the breathing machines connected through a surgical opening in the neck, the pasty liquid dripping in through a hole in the belly, the possible long, painful and only partial recovery – or sometimes more likely, no return at all of the person they remember. Set in a small Australian country town, The Dry is a tense, compelling and atmospheric murder mystery, as well as an astonishingly assured debut from English-born novelist Jane Harper. It won the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an Unpublished Manuscript in 2015, and has since been sold in more than 20 territories and – wait for it – has been optioned for a film by Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea's production company, Pacific Standard. It deserves all its acclaim. The story itself is brilliant: Federal Police investigator Aaron Falk returns to his home town to attend the funeral of his childhood best friend. The town is in shock. Luke Hadler killed his wife and son, and then turned the gun on himself. Or so it is believed. Aaron begins to have doubts. But his investigation is hampered by the skeletons of his own past – and the people of that small outback town have long memories …

My Thoughts:

I’ve really enjoyed all of Philippa Gregory’s books that I’ve read, though I’ve missed quite a few in recent years. I was drawn to this one because it is set during the English Civil War, one of my favourite periods of history, and because it's the beginning of a new series and so I didn’t feel as if I had to catch up on all the ones I’ve missed.

It tells the story of an ordinary woman, and how her skills with herb lore and midwifery lead to accusations of witchcraft. It’s a familiar story, but so beautifully told and with such depth of historical insight that the lack of surprise is easily forgiven. The pace is slow and deep and thoughtful, and the characters complex and not entirely sympathetic. The landscape is exceptionally vivid, so that you can taste the brine on the air and hear the lap and suck of the  tides. The book ends on a cliffhanger, which always runs the risk of leaving the reader unsatisfied. I must admit I’d have liked a more satisfying resolution, and a faster pace, but all in all, a great historical read.

My Thoughts:

This is a small but enchanting book about a girl named Molly whose mother accidentally changes herself into a tree. Molly is left alone to fend for herself, but discovers that she has more friends than she realised.

I loved the character of Molly, who thought she just wanted to be ordinary but discovers that being herself is better. I also loved her fey and eccentric mother, who wanders the garden and woods looking for ingredients for magical potions, and Molly’s two friends, Ellen (whose normal life with a normal family is envied by Molly) and Pim (who is anything but normal). Each character is deftly and vividly drawn, and there is a charming mix of humour, whimsy and poignancy. Glorious.
